The Weirdest Dream

Mon Jul 13, 2009, 4:44 PM
I am going to abuse my journal to relate something wonderous to you all that happened to me today. The shivers still run up and down my spine as I relate this. If any of you have a reasonable explanation for what I am about to tell you please comment.

As I slept this morning after my wife left our bed I had a dream. I remember little of it other than that I was or rather felt that I was in a position of protection for a young black man in my dream. I am not sure where we were or even what period in time this dream was taking place but the circumstances were very real. I do remember that the boy was in his mid to late teens and that other people placed importance in him in being protected in his charge. I was everywhere he was in the dream. The last part of the dream I remembered vividly before it was interrupted by me waking. I was outside in the street of some city or town at night with the boy and a young black girl with whom he was obviously in love. He began to sing to her. His voice acappella was like an angels. The song lifted me and made my heart beat with understanding that how he loved this girl that he held tightly in his arms as they sat atop a short wall along the street beneath the streetlight's glow. When I woke the song still echoed in my head. I began thinking to myself keep your eyes closed and remember as much as you can of that song because it was so amazing. It was an R&B song that I had never heard before. I remembered the lilt of the melody in his voice and the refrain 'Come on baby, Let me be your boy, again' in the chorus.

I finally rose from bed and was met by my wife at the door to the bedroom. I told her of my dream and the haunting song that was so real in my mind. My wife is very knowledgeable about supernatural occurrences and I wanted her thoughts on what I had dreamed. At first I had thought that the youthful singer had been Michael Jackson and having listened to him as a child alongside his brothers on TV perhaps it was a song I had heard there although I have no significant recollection of ever having heard this tune before in my life. The boy I saw though did not look like Michael nor was his age relative to the surroundings which had an air of the 1950's. I had even considered that this was just a song that I dreamed up complete with lyrics and could try to transcribe into reality since it was that good. My wife asked if in the dream I had seen myself from outside of my body and followed my actions that way or if I had been there in the first person. I hadn't thought about that until she asked but I remembered clearly that I was seeing thing through my own eyes but I could not remember seeing any part of my body, hands arms feet, legs at any time during the course of the dream. I remembered others in the dream interacting with me verbally however so I was there physically even though I had a sense of being a Guardian Angel for this boy.
I deceided to take the only course of action available to all of us and Google "Let me be your boy". The hair stood straight on my arms as I read that it was a song title by Wilson Pickett. Now I love Wilson Pickett's music but I do not remember ever hearing this song by him nor anyone else. I clicked one of the lyric links for the song to see if it had any relevance to the song from my dream beyond the title. As the page open on my screen tears began to well in my eyes as I read the lyrics with the memory of that voice singing them word for word rushed back into my mind. I went to the next step and searched for the song on Youtube to hear if this indeed was the same song by melody somehow knowing it would be. At first with music I was unsure but as he began to sing the voice, the tones every nuance in his voice was the same but older. I peeled of my headphones, threw them to my desk and burst out crying. I felt s though I had seen a ghost or heard on.

Today is our monthly anniversary this marking our 42nd month of marriage. This in of itself is not significant other than the weight that Douglas Adams put on the number 42 and that I am myself currently 42 years of age if you are into numbers. Not looking beyond that. I am however at the moment studying Wilson Pickett's history to see if there is any event that occurred on this date that would relate to my dream.

If any of you have any ideas on what is happening to me today, please feel free to state your thoughts. This is very unsettling and at the same time fascinating as I feel like I have traversed time or regressed to some past life although I have never felt I had such a past life and was born in the 60's so whomever I was in that dream would have to have died very soon after.

Once again though, I had never heard this song before. The music was not playing elsewhere when I woke so I cannot see that being the reason nor would anyone likely have an acappella recording that would be so clear. I have no clear explanation. I am just happy to have heard that voice. This was a profound experience and although it does not relate directly to my art this does relate to the art of a great musician. I hope someone may know something to explain this phenomenon.

"FOR RUSS AND THE ALL FATHER"-Space Wolf Space Marine battle cry

animals you call them, nay! they are men but as men they can be mosters or heros the choice is theres and theres alone-Thalon Mercrow of the Space Wolves on Psykers.
I will take you through my whole process (funny this is actually a tutorial that I am working on for everyone here already but...).
1) Use side cutters to remove your bits from the sprue or a sclapel/Exacto. I use side cutters because they are safer. Face the flat edge of the cutting bladed toward the model and carefully cut the sprue connection as closely as possible to the model without taking a chunk out of it.
2) Cut away any left over sprue nubs the usual way before starting to remove mould/flash lines.
3) Use a file or the edge of a scalpel/Exacto or other semi-sharp edged instrument to scrape or file along the flash lines on plastics (files are best for metals not so much plastics). Using the edge of a knife to scrape the lines works best I find. Be gentle and cautious hold the edge of the blade at 90 degrees from the model and perpendicular to the direction of the flash line. The point of the blade can be used to remove the flash from those hard to get at places.
4) Finally, to ensure a smooth surface, use a cosmetic nail buffer/emery board. You can obtain these from the cosmetic section of drug stores or places like WalMart and other department stores fairly cheaply. You want one or 2 with 4 grades or more of sanding surfaces (often coloured differently) including one surface that almost appears to be smooth itself. then simply buff out the imperfections gently with the various grades of emery board from the coarsest to the final smooth buffing surface. Using these you can even remove the flash from the stems of flying bases so that they are shiny and clear.

I will post that tutorial very soon so you can see what I mean.
well did it go away?

Hi there, I saw that bolter and had to :+devwatch: for the finished photo! Awesome work!

Check out The Eye of Terror a cool 40k art club.
Thanks for the comment and I will do my best to get it done for all those who are waiting to see it complete. I am in the process of sculpting a new pistol grip for it from blue insulation styro since the pink one in the photo is going to go into the Boltpistol I am creating along with Adeptus Sororitas Chainsword for the Sisters of Battle costume. My wife is too petite to handle the full Bolter. Thanks for the add to you Watch, too.
well thats very nice of you to say, and i am sad to have lost contact with him, but now you mention it, he did get really into the hobby he began painting a 'sons of medusa' army and got really excited about it, he 'caught the bug' so to speak, when i left he was looking foward to finally going to a GW store.

also i understand what you mean about not being able to afford the new stuff, but then again, i can't really buy an scenery because i don't have any one to play at home, and my mates meet up with me at GW every sunday if they want a game. but i am grinning ear to ear at the new marines stuff, i allways seem to gravitate back to marines. despite having properly begun 9 other armies, i allways fouind an excuse to do marines again. do you have a particular fave army? also i was thinking of the latest incarnation of my marine obsession being space wolves but i also want to do my initial ultramarine army justice, any chance of advice from a veteran hobbyist?

I am glad that I have given you cause to reflect and realize the good thing you did with your miniatures. Far better than throwing them away or auctioning them off to goodness knows who. Son's of Medusa you say? Wow, he really did get into the hobby then as that is not what I would call one of the main stream chapters that many people pick. I admit though I have given them a fleeting thought myself from time to time because I love their iconography and I have an avid interest in Greek History/Mythology or rather anything historical.

Not a matter of can't afford new stuff, I am seriously starving to death right now even though we have internet and all we are broke. It will work out though it always does. However, I rarely if ever purchase scenery personally when I can make my own so easily. If you do not have a game room or meets for games at home then there is no reason for terrain other than display for your models. Trust me it takes up a lot of room... but it is so much fun to make and great to have a place to use it... just need players.
Advise from a Veteran Gamer?... let me see if I can find one for you... oh wait you mean me. =P As a Veteran Gamer all I can say is that you suffer from the same conundrum we all do, 'what do I want to do more'. I like Space Wolves but I would say stick with what you have begun and while you do plan out what you would like to do with a Space Wolves army then get to work on it when you have your Ultras done and are playing with them. That way when you have played out your Ultras you will have a very different Marine army to change over to.

Do I have a favourite army? Well I would say in Fantasy it is definitely my Dark Elves. When I got my first 40K set (3rd Ed.) I promised myself I was going to go a different route than Dark Eldar so as not to be stereo-typed. Then I got a load of Dark Eldar dumped onto me so I figured why fight it. I love my Dark Eldar but the rest of the 40K universe is very cool as well. I find all of the armies very cool and probably my least favourite are the Astartes. Recently though I have been finding greater attraction to them through reading the Horus Heresy books. I have been obsessed with the Soul Drinkers Chapter from Ben Counter's novels since the first book came out. I have already built some example back when the first novel was the only one published and no one else had (that I know of and neither did Ben). Now I am contemplating a new direction with them since I have been reading everywhere the trend with making Marines 'true scale' I am going to do just that with the chapter since they are my favourite Marines and I wanted all along to make them very special. I have grand aspirations with my modeling of the characters and other armies from the books including ships for BFG and armies for Epic, even Inquisitor scale miniatures of some of the major characters. The answer though I guess would be Dark Eldar are my favourites but only marginally.
thanks for the advice, i think it's a good stratergy against shiny new model syndrome, or just the ever present hobby distraction. I will put the advice into practice, since i can stall myself with spacewolf planning and then when i'm ready i will have finished my ultra's cheers. and good point, if i do get bored with calgar's crew the wolves of fenris are a remarkably different playing style.

i notice the similarity between your favarite fantasy and 40k armies, my mate ashleigh is exactly the same, she's also a deviant memeber if your interested 'lemonsareawesome'.
i was horrified when you said you had ranked the astrates last, i mean i know they're quite mainstream but come on. But i see you have come around and are hooked aswell.

the horus heresy stories are one of the many guilty contributors to my return to space marines, but the books are excellently written, it was the emperors children in the first three books which inspired me to do my own 3rd legion, i am toying with the idea of doing a saul tarvitz conversion, perhaps i'll just name my converted captain tarvitz, the weapons are right. any way i agree with converting my fave story characters and look forward to seeing your's if you plan on posting them, the true scale marines sound awesome, i've seen a couple of good ones but can't wait to see yours.

I may have placed the Space Marines last but my favouritism in armies of the 41st Millennium are very closely ranked as I said so last is still close to first. I prefer pointy eared evil overall though. The similarity of 40K and Fantasy selection was not intentional. I tried to avoid it actually but it seems that the voice of Commorragh called me.

I have converted characters from Ben Counter's Soul Drinker and have photos in my gallery Sarpedon, Iktinos and Tellos. Of course any new conversions I do I will be posting.
